What is the entourage effect?

CBD info

The entourage effect is an interesting phenomenon that enhances the effects of compounds like CBD when they act in conjunction with other cannabinoids or terpenes. To discover the benefits of the entourage effect and how to take advantage of it, read on.

The entourage effect and CBD

The entourage effect is based on the concept of chemical synergy. In the case of hemp, the different compounds come together and enhance the benefits of each other, to a level that they cannot achieve on their own.

This is especially true in the case of CBD. Although cannabidiol shows great potential on its own, its therapeutic influence is believed to be enhanced when it works in tandem with other compounds. The researchers discovered[1] that a full-spectrum formula (one that contains different cannabinoids and terpenes) had outperformed the bell-shaped dose response of pure CBD (CBD isolate). After a certain dose, the CBD isolate shows diminishing results, but thanks to the entourage effect, the influence of a full-spectrum extract increases as more is consumed.

Simply put, the entourage effect in hemp would be the equivalent of “the more working as a team the better.” The more compounds there are in a given extract, the greater the impact of the overall effect. That’s not to say that cannabinoids aren’t effective in their own right, but by consuming full-spectrum compounds, nothing is lost and much can be gained.

The entourage effect and terpenes

Like cannabinoids, terpenes can significantly influence the effectiveness of CBD supplements. Hemp contains more than 200 of these protective, spicy and essential molecules for the defenses of the plant and CBD consumers.

Terpenes are secreted by the trichomes of hemp flowers, and are not exclusive to the Cannabis genus. In fact, they are found all over nature in the form of essential oils. Hops, citrus fruits, and evergreen trees contain varying levels of these molecules. In total, it is believed that there are more than 20,000 terpenes, and many represent well-known aromas.

These aromatic compounds also have a number of beneficial effects.[2] for people, and scientists have discovered that terpenes exert antiviral and antibacterial effects. If we combine these small but powerful molecules with cannabinoids, we obtain a set of very beneficial elements. It is one of the main reasons why full-spectrum CBD formulas contain a high amount of terpenes.

That said, there are recent studies[3] which suggest that these molecules could offer more than meets the eye. The researchers discovered a new mechanism of action for terpenes in which they appear to interact with the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to cannabinoids. Much remains to be learned about this exciting discovery, but it’s yet another piece of information in favor of full-spectrum extracts.

We’ve mentioned it a few times, and since it’s the best way to benefit from the entourage effect, here’s what you need to know about full-spectrum CBD extract.

As the name suggests, Full Spectrum CBD Extract is a formula that contains a wide selection of cannabinoids and terpenes. The exact ratio of each varies depending on the formula, but in most cases, CBD works together with cannabinoids like CBN, CBC, CBG, CBDA, and terpenes like α-pinene, terpinolene, and β-caryophyllene.

However, there is one compound that is present in very small amounts, or is completely eliminated, and that is THC. The molecule is responsible for a number of psychotropic side effects, so many manufacturers exclude it from full-spectrum extracts, or leave trace amounts behind. But that’s okay, there are plenty of different non-toxic cannabinoids and terpenes, along with CBD, that will still have a huge benefit to the entourage effect.

Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and CBD Isolate

While it’s clear from research that full-spectrum CBD extracts have the greatest potential for an entourage effect, it’s worth noting the other types of CBD extracts and their differences.

• Full Spectrum CBD – Contains a complete selection of cannabinoids and terpenes. Full-spectrum formulas unleash the entourage effect and provide the most versatile influence on wellness.

• Broad Spectrum CBD – With a broad spectrum formula, the selection of additional compounds is limited. There are still plenty of cannabinoids and terpenes, but not in the same ratio or concentration as a full spectrum alternative. Additionally, the broad spectrum formulas are 100% THC free.

• CBD Isolate: If your only goal is to look for the influence of cannabidiol, CBD isolate is the extract to try. Pure CBD extract does not include other cannabinoids or terpenes, but it has the disadvantage of not offering the entourage effect.

By now, the benefits of a full-spectrum CBD extract should be apparent, as it’s the only type that truly maximizes the potential of the entourage effect. However, broad spectrum formulas have their uses, especially if you don’t like the effect of certain cannabinoids.

Finally, there is the CBD isolate. Based on the study above, we know that results with pure CBD are diminishing, but if you are concerned about the presence of other cannabinoids or unwanted compounds, CBD isolate is a great way to alleviate these concerns.

It is up to you to balance the benefits of each extract with your needs. The most effective option will be the one that establishes the best synergistic relationship with your wellness routine.

The entourage effect in CBD oil

The entourage effect in CBD oil

After having talked extensively about the entourage effect and its influence on CBD, you are probably wondering how to get a full spectrum extract so you can try it. Well, this is where CBD oil comes into play.

For a full spectrum CBD oil to offer maximum benefit, it must be produced using CO₂ extraction. It is one of the few extraction methods that offers the control and precision needed to retain all the cannabinoids and terpenes needed to maximize the entourage effect.

Of course, what we offer at Cibdol is a full-spectrum CBD oil made using CO₂ extraction. CBD may have many potential benefits, but why not enhance its effectiveness by including equally effective compounds? The only real downside to full spectrum CBD oil is how difficult it is to produce and find a high quality extract that you can trust. Fortunately, Cibdol’s specialized laboratory manages to perform this task in spades.

If you want to experience the entourage effect, you can check out Cibdol’s selection of full-spectrum CBD oils in concentrations from 5 to 40%. Or, if you want more information on the effects of different cannabinoids and terpenes, visit our CBD Encyclopedia.
