The treatment of psychiatric disorders is not an easy task. The brain is a complex organ and science continues to work to unravel its mysteries. A possible step in the right direction comes to us thanks to CBD, which is being investigated for its anti-psychotic properties – that is, its ability to treat schizophrenia.
Marijuana has long been said to be a substance that causes psychosis. To be more exact, THC, the main psychoactive compound in the plant, is what induces these effects. What not many know is that CBD (like CBD oil), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid also found in cannabis (and hemp), counteracts the psychoactive effect of THC.
ANDL CBD AND AN INTERESTING POSSIBILITY
As you can imagine, this fact is extremely interesting for scientists in the field of psychiatric disorders. If CBD is able to counteract the psychotic properties of THC, it may also counteract the properties of other sources and forms of psychosis.
In the first study of its kind to evaluate CBD, a team from the Western University School of Medicine has found that CBD use appears to have therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of schizophrenia.

It should be mentioned that this study was carried out with rats, and it is not proof that CBD is an effective treatment for humans. However, it is a first step that offers scientists the opportunity to investigate further, eventually leading to human clinical trials.
As already mentioned, the treatment of diseases such as schizophrenia is not easy. Although there are antipsychotic medications, they are often ineffective and have serious side effects, so it is important to find another alternative. It is the main reason why Dr. Laviolette, the principal investigator of the study, has embarked on this path of research – stating that current options are insufficient and new and successful ones need to be found. CBD doesn’t affect the body in the same way as typical antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs, so it doesn’t have their horrible side effects.
It is an interesting line of research that is reflected in other studies. For example, the cannabinoids in medical marijuana are an effective treatment for PTSD – another complicated psychological disorder. Although THC is used in this case, it shows just how powerful cannabinoids can be when harnessed for a good cause. While it’s not a real thing yet, it looks like CBD could be the answer many scientists are looking for; Let’s hope that future research will be able to discover what really happens.
