Some consumers confuse CBD oil with hemp seed oil, and many are under the impression that they are the same thing. Despite coming from the same plant, there is a big difference between the two.
Discover the key features of both CBD oil and hemp seed oil. You will learn what makes them unique, how they work inside the body, and how they are made.
What is hemp oil?
Hemp oil, better known as hemp seed oilis extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant.
These Little Packages of DNA Are Rich in Nutrients that are condensed and refined during the oil manufacturing process. Hemp seeds are one of the most nutritious plant foods, containing an impressive amount of healthy fats, protein, and essential minerals.
Although the oil from these seeds does not contain cannabinoids, it is a very healthy addition to any diet.
Is CBD oil the same as hemp oil?
The short answer is no.
It is true that both CBD oil and hemp seed oil are products derived from the cannabis plant, specifically a selectively bred, low-THC variety known as industrial hemp.
But each is derived from different parts of your anatomy. The CBD comes mainly from flowers of the hemp plant, while the hemp oil is made from seeds.
CBD produces specific effects on the human body by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, among other molecular targets.
On the other hand, hemp seeds do not contain cannabinoids, so hemp oil does not produce the same physiological effects. Instead, hemp seed oil offers large amounts of beneficial nutrients, including fatty acids.
We are going to analyze the differences between these two hemp-based oils.
Manufacture of hemp oil
Hemp seeds have a hard outer shell that houses two premature cotyledons, a rootlet, and an endosperm. The manufacturers obtain the oil from these seeds by pressing them with special devices.
Hemp seeds must be properly pressed to preserve the beneficial properties of the oil. Excess heat can cause healthy fats to oxidize and break down, reducing the nutritional value of the final product.
For this reason, our seeds are cold pressed in order to protect their nutritional value.
Technicians place the seeds in a cold-press machine that uses hydraulic pressure to gently squeeze them, sending the obtained oil to another container and separating the fiber and waste material. Cold press machines never go above 49°C. After this pressing, the hemp seed oil is packaged with its amino acids and healthy fats still intact.
Hemp Oil Ingredients
Hemp oil contains only one ingredient: hemp seed oil!
Quality products do not contain preservatives or contaminants, and offer a shelf life of up to six months after opening.
Hemp oil benefits
Although every bottle of hemp seed oil contains only one ingredient, the oil itself features a long list of beneficial molecules. Hemp seed oil is a highly nutritious alternative to butter, olive oil, and coconut oil for cooking, and even for use as cosmetics.
Some of the numerous nutrients that hemp seed oil contains are:
• Omega-3 fatty acids
• Omega-6 fatty acids
• Gamma-linolenic acid
• Vitamin E
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is an extract obtained from hemp flowers. These buds have small mushroom-shaped glands called trichomes that produce a resin rich in CBD and aromatic terpenes.
Manufacturers isolate and concentrate these valuable phytochemicals using various extraction techniques. As a result, CBD oil is an easy-to-administer, concentrated cannabidiol preparation.
As one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis, researchers have studied the effects of CBD for several decades. This molecule interacts with the body in a unique and multifaceted way, generating effects that we will see in more detail below.
Manufacture of CBD oil
At Cibdol, the production of CBD oil begins with hemp plants grown naturally in the EU and with a THC content below 0.02%. This negligible amount of the psychoactive molecule allows plants to comply with European regulations and does not produce psychoactive effects. After thoroughly processing the plant matter, there are several ways to extract the phytochemicals we are interested in. We carry out state-of-the-art supercritical extraction to obtain a pure and clean extract.
Our technicians fill the extraction vessel with hemp flowers before introducing supercritical CO₂. In this state, CO₂ exhibits the characteristics of a liquid and a gas simultaneously, allowing it to pass through plant material and act as a solvent to extract cannabidiol and terpenes.
The supercritical CO₂ rich in phytochemicals then passes to a separator where it undergoes a phase exchange. Changes in temperature and pressure cause CBD oil to separate from CO₂, which is less dense. The result is a completely pure oil without residues or contaminants.
Next, we add the highly concentrated CBD extract to a carrier oil, such as olive, hemp seed, or MCT. All of these carrier oils have a pleasant flavor and fatty molecules that bind to cannabidiol and enhance its bioavailability.
CBD oil ingredients
The ingredients in a bottle of CBD oil vary depending on its formula. Some preparations are simpler than others, containing only three ingredients, while others contain additional herbs and extracts.
Cibdol’s standard oil contains only three ingredients:
• CBD: derived from hemp extracted with CO₂. The concentration of our preparations ranges from 2.5 to 40%.
• Terpenes: aromatic molecules that produce a synergistic effect with the CBD.
• Carrier Oil (Olive Oil): A nutritionally rich oil that binds to the cannabinoid and helps deliver active phytochemicals to the body.
Other CBD products in our range contain additional phytochemicals to meet specific needs. These substances include:
• Hemp seed oil
• Black cumin seed oil
• Vitamin C with CBD
• Melatonin with CBD
Advantages of CBD oil
CBD oil offers concentrated doses of cannabidiol with a set number of milligrams per drop. Convenient dropper bottles make administration of this cannabinoid very easy both at home and on the go. But why take CBD oil in the first place?
CBD oil produces various effects that help promote mental and physical well-being. Although science still has a long way to go to fully understand how cannabidiol works in the human body, we have a general idea of these interactions.
Current research indicates that CBD achieves its effects in the following ways:
• Interacting with the endocannabinoid system
• Binding to TRPV2 receptors
• Binding to serotonin receptors
• Preventing the reuptake of the endocannabinoid anandamide
What is cannabis oil?
Cannabis oil is distinct from CBD oil and hemp seed oil, and refers to an extract derived from cannabis flowers that is high in THC, other cannabinoids, and terpenes.
Due to the presence of the psychoactive THCcannabis oil is illegal in most European countries.
How to avoid buying the wrong oil
Not all CBD oils are the same. Quality can vary greatly depending on the type of hemp and the extraction technique used. Improperly made alcohol extracts can leave residues in the oil, and non-organically grown hemp can have pesticides in the mix.
Always buy CBD oil from a reputable producer to ensure you get a clean, pure and safe product. At Cibdol, we only use legal European hemp and safe CO₂ extraction techniques. We also offer the results of independent tests showing the level of cannabinoids and the figures of the analysis of heavy metals.
How are CBD oil and hemp oil different?
Since CBD oil and hemp seed oil are so different, it is not a question of choosing between one or the other. Both preparations have unique functions and effects.
CBD oil has a high level of cannabidiol and terpenes and produces specific physiological changes. This cannabinoid interacts with the endocannabinoid system and with other receptors to exert these effects.
Hemp seed oil does not offer the same effects but is high in key nutrients and is very popular as a culinary ingredient and cosmetic product.
We recommend trying both options to see how they improve different aspects of your daily life. Plus, Cibdol offers you the option of consuming them together with our CBD Hemp Seed Oil, a formula that suspends cannabidiol in a nut-flavored hemp seed oil.
