Hemp cultivation for industry and food

ANDL HEMP – PRIMARY PLANT

Hemp, or Cannabis Sativa, is an annual dioecious plant that has been cultivated for millennia. All parts of the plant are used in a way that is beneficial to humans. It has a wide variety of practical and industrial applications, from animal husbandry to painting, through the production of food, textiles, plastics and medicines. Hemp can be grown and processed in different ways to achieve the desired results.

Hemp is a very resistant and versatile plant, which enjoys a long and rich history. Until its prohibition, the cultivation of hemp was mandatory for farmers in the United States, and it was the preferred method of paying taxes. Hemp has played such a linked role with humans that it has its own place in etymology. The Arabic word for cannabis, qannab, is the root of the word hemp, and hemp is present in many names, including canvas.

But make no mistake. The words marijuana, hemp, and cannabis are different names for the same plant. Marijuana is Mexican slang used by Hearst newspapers to confuse and influence the population for nefarious purposes and to force the moral support of an ignorant public in order to ban one of the most useful plants on the planet.

ANDHEMP IS VERY VERSATILE

Agriculture determines the final product. If grown together, hemp has minimal lateral branching and long bast fibers. If grown separately, the lateral branches grow larger and the plant has a shorter height and more inflorescences.

The drug issue has been an unfortunate smokescreen used by prohibitionists for so many decades that it has become an erroneous fact of Western culture.

THC and other cannabinoids play an essential role in the early development of the hemp plant. By acting with other resins, they perform antibacterial, antifungal and anti-drying functions.

When cannabis is used in industry, it is useless for medicinal or recreational purposes, as the seeds are left to develop. When pollinated, hemp undergoes certain hormonal changes that stop the production of psychoactive resins and accelerate the biological processes for seed production. Also, some varieties of hemp are monoecious or self-pollinating (hermaphroditic).

Much of the industrial value of the hemp plant lies in its seeds. The seeds constitute 80% of the final weight of industrial cannabis. They are pressed for oil, they form the basis of organic paints and lacquers, and most importantly, they are a complete food for humans.

On the one hand, if a dispensary tried to compete with the plant material that remains after the industrial process, they would be the laughing stock of any Cannabis Cup in the world. If a modern THC-rich, Cannabis Cup-winning Sativa strain were grown under industrial conditions, it would have no medicinal content.

On the other hand, if we could travel back in time to George Washington’s farm, take some of his hemp seeds and grow them using the modern method of sinsemilla cultivation (removing the male plants to avoid fertilizing the females), the final product it would be a reasonable recreational or therapeutic example of contemporary marijuana.

R.GROWING OF HEMP

Cannabis in the form of hemp has enjoyed a renaissance in recent decades. The proliferation of the internet means that everyone can find out how useful this plant is. It has numerous practical applications such as the environmental reclamation of deserts, as fiber for luxury clothing or, most importantly, the production of nutritious foods and therapeutic oils.

Hemp seeds are rich in protein and vitamins, and are renowned for their culinary versatility. They contain gamma-linolenic acid and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids in a 3:1 ratio, ready to be absorbed by the body. Hemp seeds are considered a healthy addition to any diet.

With a 15-30cm taproot and vigorous growth, hemp is an ideal soil conditioner, hindering weed growth and increasing the friability of depleted soils.

Hemp produces four times the resources of an acre of trees (biomass, oxygen, fiber), while fixing four times as much carbon dioxide.

Seeds, fiber, oil, and livestock feed can be obtained from a harvest of this venerable plant.

The versatile hemp plant claims its reputation as the source of an amalgamation of beneficial products for humans.
