CBD: what you need to know

CBD (cannabidiol) belongs to a family of compounds called cannabinoids. They are unique in that they exist outside of the body and, when consumed, can influence a wide network of receptors.

What is CBD?

What is the difference between CBD and THC?

You have probably heard of THC long before CBD. THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) is not only the main reason why marijuana (another subspecies of Cannabis sativa) is illegal in much of the world, but it is also known to produce psychotropic effects (high).

Fortunately, not all cannabinoids are the same, and while there may be subtle differences between their chemical structures, they are enough to significantly modify their effects.

Differences in the chemical structure of CBD mean that it does not interact with the body in the same way as THC. As a result, this cannabinoid is non-toxic, non-high, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO)[1]It has no potential for abuse.

How does CBD work?

Knowing where CBD comes from is one thing, but what about that all-important interaction we talked about?

For CBD to exert its effect, it needs a contact point: the endocannabinoid system. His name may sound complicated, but he plays a pretty straightforward role.

The endocannabinoid system or ECS exists in all mammals[2]such as dogs and cats, and even in non-mammalian animals such as goldfish.

The role of the ECS in humans is a relatively new discovery (early 1990s), and the reason why its research is still ongoing, but the importance of this system should not be underestimated.

What we do know is this: the ECS functions as a regulatory system that plays important roles in vital organs, the brain, and the nervous and immune systems.

Your job is to look at all of these systems and make sure that they are working properly, and that they get the resources they need when they need them. If for some reason it doesn’t, it will try to help by releasing certain biological compounds and enzymes.

How does CBD interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS)?

For the ECS to kick in, it must be activated by cannabinoids like CBD.

Something it does through two types of receptors: CB1 Y CB2. Both receptors function as access points for the ECS (a kind of gate between the human body and cannabinoids).

CB1 receptors are found mainly in the brain and parts of the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are present in the immune system and digestive system.

However, to ensure that only the right compounds enter the correct pathway, the receptors have a kind of “lock”. When a receptor interacts with the correct cannabinoid, the pathway is unblocked and the ECS takes action.

The CBD “key” does not fit neatly into the “locks” of the CB1 and CB2 receptors, but it influences them in other ways. Instead of opening the pathway directly, CBD promotes the binding of different chemicals and enzymes.

When this occurs, we experience several of the effects for which this compound is famous. However, while CBD is not the only compound that can stimulate CB1 and CB2 receptors, it is one of the few that does not produce psychoactive effects.

CB1 and CB2 receptors are not the only receptors that CBD influences

CBD’s role as a versatile CEO goes beyond CB1 and CB2 receptors.

It also influences receptors that are not directly related to the ECS; such as the receptors that cause the release of serotonin (5-HT), a chemical substance that favors the feeling of happiness and well-being.

CBD also interacts with TRP channels, but don’t let this name intimidate you as its role is very simple.

TRP channels exist within cells and act like the dashboard of cars, controlling factors such as temperature and pain. If they detect a temperature that is too low or too high, they send a signal so that the body can act.

Finally, CBD also causes a reaction by receptors in the liver (PPAR-alpha). This speeds up metabolism within the liver and is something that scientists are still trying to understand.

CBD also plays a role in the production and breakdown of enzymes

Earlier we mentioned that CBD belongs to a family of compounds called cannabinoids. While these exist outside of the body, human physiology has developed its own type of cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids.

They are similar to CBD in molecular structure, but occur naturally (inside the body).

One of the most influential endocannabinoids is anandamide (AEA).

High concentrations of AEA are broken down by the body, but CBD has the unusual ability to slow this process down. We still have a lot to learn about the possibilities related to this reaction, but the researchers believe that a high concentration of AEA could influence appetite, sleep patterns and mood.
