Cannabidiol: What is the effect of CBD?

CBD info

Primarily consumed for its relaxing virtues, CBD is nevertheless credited with many other benefits. Anxiety, insomnia, de-stressing… We hear more and more about the beneficial effects of CBD, but have you already checked this information? We have scoured the internet for serious studies on the subject, and we invite you to discover their results here.
Today, Sixty8 invites you to discover the effects of CBD and take a tour of recent studies on the subject.

What is cannabidiol?

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a molecule found naturally in the cannabis plant. It is the second most present “cannabinoid” in this plant, after THC. THC is the psychoactive molecule naturally present in cannabis.
On the other hand, CBD is not a psychoactive substance. It was the World Health Organization (WHO) that decided so in 2017, in removing CBD from controlled substances.

Since this decision, many states have decided to authorize the exploitation and trade of this product.

Switzerland was the forerunner in this area in Europe by regulating the sale of products with CBD in 2011! It is for this reason that the precursors of CBD in Europe are located there. The other European countries followed the movement following the regularization of the product by the WHO.
Now that we know what we are going to talk about on this page, let’s talk about the effects of this substance.

Relax with CBD cannabis

Relaxation is the effect most sought after by people who consume CBD. Dr. Yasmin Hurd (Director of the Mt Sinai Institute of Addiction) specifies that :
“CBD may activate certain serotonin receptors and the serotonin system is associated with anxiety relief.”
Dr. Hurd has been researching the effects of CBD for 10 years and has been instrumental in the discoveries related to it in recent years.
“Whether in normal conditions or in people with anxiety disorders, enough research has begun to show that it [le CBD] has an anti-anxiety effect.” Dr. Y. Hurd.
This relaxing effect, so much sought after, is directly linked to our next part: CBD against anxiety!

Cannabidiol for anxiety

It was in 2008 that a Brazilian study made the link between CBD consumption and serotonin production.
According to this study, CBD would more precisely activate serotonin receptors “5-HT1A”. By activating these receptors, CBD sends a signal to the brain: there is an excess production of serotonin in the body.
The brain will then try to correct this imbalance and this means that emotions are more easily regulated and so are anxiety attacks.
Although it is by no means a medicine intended to cure anxiety, CBD can therefore help calm attacks on an ad hoc basis. As often with CBD, we are not talking about a drug but rather a supplement that will help you manage certain symptoms. (source:
While this is true for Cannabidiol (CBD) cannabis, I must caution you that THC cannabis can be counterproductive for anxiety.
If you suffer from anxiety attacks, or want to fight stress with a natural product, we advise you to first discuss CBD with your doctor. He will be able to guide and advise you to make the best decision.

CBD to fight insomnia

Insomnia problems can make everyday life very difficult. Drowsiness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety… The symptoms are numerous and can seriously harm the morale and social life of the patient who suffers them.
We have already seen, in the previous part, that CBD can have a positive impact on anxiety problems, the benefits of CBD do not stop there according to recent studies as we will see…
Like we have already talked about it in another article, a study published in the journal “Medicine” from 2016 to 2018 showed that cannabinoids would decrease the symptoms of insomnia.
Another study published in the scientific journal “Permanent Diary” has established links between CBD consumption and the relief of sleep disturbance problems.

The cosmetic virtues of CBD

CBD-based cosmetic products are numerous in specialist shops. CBD has indeed some very useful virtues to fight against skin problems for example…
CBD is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. A 2019 scientific study published in the journal “Antioxidants” highlighted these two properties of cannabidiol.
In cosmetics, these two effects are sought after to develop skin care products. This is the main application that is made of CBD in cosmetic products, although there are also CBD hair care products as well as products intended for athletes to help recovery, for example.
