What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is a well-known and sought-after cannabis concentrate. CBD, one of many cannabinoids found in hemp and cannabis plants, is an organic compound but insoluble in water at room temperature. The CBD contained in a carrier oil can be supplied in a number of forms, including liquids, topical creams, and even food products.
Although THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is considered the best-known cannabinoid, CBD (cannabidiol) produces different effects that make it a more viable and versatile compound than THC. In fact, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first formulation with CBD (in the form of a cannabidiol oral spray) to treat two rare types of childhood epilepsy, called Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut. However, federal regulations prohibit advertising the effectiveness of CBD in a medical context. CBD products sold online are classified as personal care products or natural supplements.
Why use hemp instead of marijuana to take advantage of CBD?
As we have mentioned, hemp is high in CBD and low in THC, and marijuana is generally the opposite. Industrial hemp is a variant of the Cannabis sativa species, which has been selectively bred over decades to have useful traits for various industries. This not only allows consumers to dose up on hemp-based CBD oil without getting high, it also means that hemp can be legally grown and the oil can be imported.
